BIP39: Mnemonic passphrase wordlist generators (all types and words)
Contents
You will learn how to use a passphrase and word generators, and discover the advantages and disadvantages they offer.
A mnemonic phrase (seed phrase) is the master key to access your BTC wallet. The BIP39 standard defines a dictionary of 2048 words, where each word corresponds to a specific number.
By adding a passphrase to your seed phrase, which acts as an additional secret, you significantly complicate the task for potential attackers, even if the seed phrase becomes known.
All these generators have different security levels. Logically, the highest level of secure generation is offered by hardware wallets and offline software.
Dictionary
In the dropdown list below, you will find the complete dictionary of 2048 words.
Allows bulk generation of mnemonic phrases – convenient for testing and analysis.
Hardware
Hardware generators are considered the most secure option, as they operate offline and use built-in high-quality randomness sources. This method is used in hardware wallets.
There are no known cases of insecure phrase generation by hardware devices.
Let's examine the table of hardware mnemonic generators.
Generates a mnemonic phrase according to the BIP39 standard; equipped with a large screen for transaction verification and recovery, ensuring high security.
Supports generation and recovery of BIP39 mnemonic phrases; compatible with a mobile app for convenient crypto management.
Generators like mobile wallets and online services are not recommended because they are insecure. Therefore, we will not consider them.
Instead, let's focus on maximum, even paranoid, security. For this, it's time to understand what a passphrase is.
Passphrase
Passphrase is an additional secret (not from the BIP39 dictionary!) added to the seed phrase to create a completely new root key. It is NOT the 25th word from the dictionary!
Why do you need it? Imagine you are carrying your seed phrase across a border - customs officers or other personnel might see it, photograph it, and gain access to your funds. This is a risk. Hence, the passphrase was invented.
In a nutshell, a passphrase can be thought of as an additional word(s) for the seed phrase. That is, instead of a dictionary of 24 words, you additionally use a 25th word.
You can specify a word for the Passphrase in the mnemonic generator at iancoleman.io. However, remember that you come up with the 25th word yourself; no dictionary is needed for this. Unlike the seed, the passphrase can include any ASCII characters (from 32 to 126 in the table), including spaces and special characters.
You can learn about all the differences between a seed phrase, passphrase, PIN code, and password from this guide.
Important: It is crucial never to store your passphrase together with your seed phrase, as this defeats its purpose — together they become as vulnerable as a single lost key.
Words can repeat. A phrase where the word about appears 23 times, followed by one correctly chosen 24th word, is considered valid and is even used for testing algorithms.
The dictionary of 2048 words is designed so that the first 4 letters are enough to uniquely identify each word.
